What To Do With An Empty Corner In The Bedroom

I need your help, friends! What should I do with this corner of my bedroom?

{I know you're jealous of my super-awesome drafting software, huh?}

Here are some real photos of the layout.

{entering from the hallway}

{the view of the bed. i'm sorry, i couldn't be bothered to make my bed when the rest of the room is still a mess. also, let's ignore the plastic on my box spring. }

{the closet doors are on the left, opposite the bed.}

So, when you enter my bedroom, the dresser is on the wall to the right of you. The wall to the left is taken up completely by closet doors. The bed pretty much takes up the rest of the space. So, there's this empty spot in the corner and I kind of hate it.

{the same corner, but in different light}

I don't really want to block the window, but I think SOMETHING needs to go there! I originally had this bookcase in there, but it looked way too crowded (sorry I don't have a picture of it IN the bedroom), and it blocked the window.

{this bookcase is now in the living room}

Right now, I have a cheapo floor mirror propped up in this corner (a future project - I'd like to add molding and put it behind the door).

I'd love to get the cable box off the dresser, so maybe a little console table with a mirror over it? Maybe a vanity table? The cats also like to sit in front of the window, so whatever is there needs to have a cat-friendly surface, otherwise they'll just knock everything over.

Note: the space between the window and the dresser is EXACTLY 36 inches, so I'd need something slightly smaller. That dresser weighs 321681 pounds and is immovable.

  I'm stuck! Help me!

  2. Have you tried the bed on the other wall next to the window? If not, I'd try that -- looks like it might give you room to walk around it and be able put the nightstand on the right side of it. I'd leave the dresser where it is, hang the mirror either on the back of the door or behind it. You could add a small shelf just under the TV (I know what others have said about moving it out of the bedroom, but that'd be a no go for me, too!) that could hold the cable box and get it off the dresser. They have some pretty neat ones at Lowes that are about the same tone as your furniture -- some only about 18 inches long. If you have enough room after moving the bed, you could add a small upholstered chair in the corner between the dresser and the window, for you and your sweet kitties! :)

    1. Hi Molly! Thanks for your comment :) When I first moved in, I tried the bed on that wall (the one to the left when you enter). The problem is, the headboard of my bed is very high and if i wanted to put the dresser on the wall that the headboard is on now, then the bed blocked the window. If the bed is opposite the dresser, there is no room to walk or open drawers. It's a super tiny room :/ i like the idea of putting the mirror behind the door! Haha, thanks for understanding about the TV - it's staying! I love the idea of the shelf under the TV. I'm going to Lowe's this afternoon anyway, so I'm going to take a look! Thanks!

  3. I think it would be really easy to make a box to hang on the wall painted the color of your furniture. It would outline under the tv. Help cover up your cords and add more dimension to the room. Have you ever thought about oddly shaped bookshelves on the blank wall? I also think a nice little bench with storage would work in the corner storage plus a place to sit while you put your shoes on or to read a book. Some kind of lighting above to read at night if needed.

    1. Hi Janet! Thanks for your comment! These are great ideas! I like the idea of a box/shelf underneath the tv. I'm going to do some research on that one!

  4. What is the reason for having the bed in the corner? Can it not go under/next to the windows? Feet facing the dresser? Or have the dresser along one side?

    1. Hi mystery commenter! The bed won't fit in the room with the dresser at it's feet. There's just no space to walk through or open any drawers. When I first moved in, I tried the bed on the wall that the bed is up against now (the one to the left when you enter). The problem is, the headboard of my bed is very high and if i wanted to put the dresser on the wall that the headboard is on now, then the bed blocked the window.

  5. Get you one of the tiered cat stands. They are sometimes covered in carpet. Cats love climbing on them and it would give your cats a place to look out the window. One of the shelves maybe can hold the cable box to free up the top of your dresser

    1. hello! thanks for your comment! i'm thinking a cat stand might be an option, i've just never been a fan of them aesthetically. i'm looking for a cute one, though!

  6. hi hope all has been going well for you.... i see you have you bed against the wall could you scoot it a little more towards the window put a night stand between bed and wall and scoot current nightstand over under window...if you still have a tiny space left in the corner a tall vase with tall bamboo would bring some height to that corner, if you could find a small bookcase or some such that could be turned on it's side which could fit under tv you could use it for display and to hide wires and put the cable box in i suck at explaining but hope you can get the gist xx

    1. Hey stranger! Everything is good, just trying to figure out where I'm going to fit all my stuff. This house is bigger, but it feels smaller since I don't have a home for everything yet. I took your advice (halfway) and I scooted the bed over more towards the center of the room, putting the nightstand more under the window. I can't fit my other huge nightstand in the corner on the other side, but maybe I can re-purpose a plant stand from somewhere else to use as a small side table. I really like the idea of a small bookcase on it's side under the TV, maybe i can look for a hutch type of piece. Thanks for the ideas!
